Abstract

This study looks at how rivers, resistance and women’s struggle intertwine with each other in 3 fictions set in, respectively, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. Not only has a river become life-giving forces, but it is also a locus of diverse social conflicts where women are often the most victimized yet survived. Making use of ecofeminism and related theoretical concepts such as Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato si’ on the environment and human ecology, this study examines the female characters and their ordeals in the three fictions discussed. This study reveals that first, ecological economy depends on water sustainability where women try very hard to protect nature against degradation. Secondly, abuse of women is seen in parallel with abuse of nature. In the end, this study concludes that the women’ resistance against patriarchy confirms the theoretical relevance of ecofeminism for the reading of Southeast Asian fictions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of symbols in social media and its impact on the language among students of the Arabic language program at Jouf University. Youth category is the largest group exposed to linguistic decline because of being hooked on social media. This has created negative impressions of their language, as a generation may emerge far from his language and identity, unable to express, the transition from verbal symbols to symbolic leads to shifts in meaning and function, and the reduction of sensations in the yellow faces (emoticons).  These symbols serve only general purposes, initial and superficial connotations, simple words and sentences. The use of language in everyday conversations to communicate with relatives and entertainment is one of the most motivating habits of language revolt, especially the positive impression it has left on young people for their ease of expression, attractiveness and simplicity, effortless, shortening speech, and modernity, all of which led to dumping in their language use. It can, therefore, lead to the development of encrypted language dictionaries, change the pattern of thinking, hasten the formation of false personal impressions, and lead to introverts and psychological isolation; therefore, young people fall victim to linguistic decay.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the comparison on the syntactic feature of denominal verbs of the Bahasa Indonesia and the English. The syntactic feature defined as a presentation of transitivity (and valency) on the construction of derivated verbs. Based on observation (simak) method formulated by Sudaryanto (2015), the data taken from the usage of Bahasa Indonesia and tha English on written forms. Based on Contrastive Syntax approach designed by Hickey (2017), the result shows two descriptions of comparison, namely the similarities and the differences of syntactic features. First, the similarities are (a) transitive feature and (b) an intransitive feature. Second, the differences are (a) the bitransitive feture of bahasa Indonesia, (b) the markers of transitivity of Bahasa Indonesia and the English and (c) the grammatical relations of the English denominal verb. For further study, researcher may pay attention on detail analysis of the role of denominal verbs in sentences construction of the Bahasa Indonesia and the English.

Abstract

The discussion of the social relationship meaning between participants in language interaction, particularly spoken, is interesting. Sport domain,  one of the discourse that close to the social community, is still rarely uncovered in language research. This research highlights the interpersonal meaning of the mocking chant to football players sung by supporters of the English Premiere League (EPL), especially from the 6 biggest clubs (the big six). It uncovers interpersonal meaning through the analysis of the MOOD system, modality, and polarity within the Systemic Functional Linguistic approach. It is a qualitative descriptive study using content analysis. The data are clauses taken from the ‘football player-mocking’ chant lyrics from the supporters of the big six clubs. The analysis results are obtained through domain, taxonomy, componential and cultural themes analysis. MOOD system analysis shows an equal position between supporters and listeners. It is also supported the finding that the information exchanged in the discourse are about events or disgrace of the mocked players. Eventhough, it must be noted that the mocked players are positioned at different points of view because of the negative value of the polarity. The modality analysis shows the confidence of supporters when singing the mocking chant to the players.

Abstract

Children’s narratives have served as an effective diagnostic tool for teachers and researchers to engage to a variety of language acquisition and development aspects. Previous works have extensively assessed this type of language production along two dimensions; story memory and story quality in which the first concerns on children’s ability to accurately reproduce units of information within the story, while the second emphasizes their understanding of story structures. Our analysis focuses on the second where we carefully look at two categories; orientations (person, time, place, connectors, etc) and evaluation (personal judgment). Our data were based in part on a limited corpus of multilingual written production of 261 third graders in 6 primary schools in east java, Indonesia. This dataset contained the production of both personal narratives in which our participants had to write their personally experienced event of school holiday and fictional narratives where they had to rewrite a short video story of a perfect father’s day. To generate the targeted expressions from our relatively large datasets, we utilized a corpus tool of AntConc. Our analysis has echoed several findings. In terms of ‘person’ orientation, our participants were consistent in orienting their personal narratives with ‘I’ and their fictional narratives with ‘dad/father’. The emergence of the word ‘home’ in the first place was particularly interesting as a key to explain ‘place’ orientation that it translates a place to start and end the activities in children’s point of view. The word ‘after’ and ‘then’ to connect events were heavily found in our data that it illustrates the pedagogical need to enrich their lexical knowledge. Finally, at the expense of being multilingual, evidence of code-mixing was also apparent in our participants’ English narratives that this may posit pedagogical implication too.

Abstract

Literacy workshop is important activity delivered in community to increase people’s competencies not only in reading and writing, but more importantly in building critical perspectives. However, the result of the literacy workshop needs to be examined, not only to find out the success indicator of the workshop, but also to understand the narration presented in young peoples‘ works. It is necessary to get the idea of what the young people’s concern and thought. This paper discusses the writings as the products of literacy workshop held at Trenggalek, East Java, which was attended by young people as participants. The workshop results in 12 writings, consisting of two short stories, and 10 essays.  The questions raised in this paper are; how is the discourse of daily life represented in the writings of the literacy workshop participants? What are the social and cultural factors affecting the writers in constructing the discourse? This paper argues that young people’s concern reflects the current social cultural issues that matters in our life. Literacy for young people is not merely giving the skill of reading and writing, but it is a meaning-making process, that enable them to construct the meaning of their everyday life.

Abstract

Descartes' philosophical thinking influences the method of literary criticism developed by Thaha Husein, namely, cogito ergo sum 'I think, therefore I am.' To ensure that something exists, it must be doubted first. Likewise, the existence of jahili Arabic literature, which was conveyed verbally from generation to generation, did not rule out counterfeiting. However, Thaha Husein only saw the existence of jahili Arabic literature autonomously by denying the external factors surrounding it. Though literary works are manifestations and reflections of socio-cultural conditions that establish dialectical relations with the author, therefore, the extrinsic aspects that exist outside the text that characterize the original building of literary works cannot be ignored.

Abstract

There are various kinds of translation strategies proposed by the experts of translation. This study aims to find out the translation strategies used by the English Education students from Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) of Universitas Brawijaya (UB) in translating a news article. The translation strategies used by the students are categorized based on the Baker's taxonomy. The result shows that the students employ all of the eight translation strategies from Baker's taxonomy in translating the news article. The three most used translation strategies are translation by using a more general word (95%), paraphrasing using related words (75%), cultural submission and omission (73%). On the contrary, the least used translation strategy is translation by illustration (31%). From the result of the study, it is suggested that researchers interested in translation can conduct more research about the students' translation in a deeper and more specific analysis.
